Area: INTERNET Msg#: 7294 Date: 18 Jan 00 02:02 From: Nopadol Yuthasilp Read: Yes Replied: No To: All Mark: Subj: Ping Which port is used by ping ? Ping doesn't use a port, it uses the ICMP [Internet Control Message Protocol (only UDP and TCP and protocols based on them use ports), which doesn't use ports] echo request/reply function. Under Unix, the ping utility places its process ID in the identifier field of the ICMP header. When the echo reply comes back, all processes with an open raw socket set to the ICMP protocol will get a copy of the reply. Ping uses the PID in the identifier field to check if the reply is for this particular instance of ping. In effect, the identifier field serves the same purpose as a port number. A trojan horse backdoor that used ICMP would be very hard to detect without actually sniffing the wire. -!- FMail/386 1.48b ! Origin: Freelance BBS/FAX (662)910-2363 (6:608/100)
