T-64 A The T-64 A tank is developed by the Design Bureau named after Morozov in the city of Kharkov, under the head of the main designer lieutenant-general Shonin N. The production of the vehicle began in 1969 at the Kharkov plant named after Malyshev. The tank T-64 A is a farther development of the T-64 tank. The principal different unlike tank T-64 A : 125-mm smoothbore tank gun-launcher, new fire control system, antiaircraft MG with a remote control, the new system antiair defence, the entrenching tools and the device for hanging up a mine sweeper, the multifuel engine, the system for deep wading and the system securing work engine on the conditions heightmountains.
The tank has a classical general lay-out with the crew consisting of three members. The reduction of the crew is achieved due to employment of the automatic loading device. The fighting compartment is located in the middle part of the hull and in the turret. The engine compartment is located in the rear part of the tank. The primary armament of the tank is a 125-mm smoothbore tank gun-launcher. The ammunition supply consist of 37 rounds of separate loading. The fire control system provides target acquisition and tracking of target by the commander and the gunner, automatic input of correction for non-standard conditions of fire, laying and stabilization of the gun and the MG coaxial with the gun. The secondary armament of the tank includes a 7.62 mm PKT MG coaxial with the gun and a 12.7 mm antiaircraft NVST MG with a remote control from the tank commander's place.
The hull is of a welded structure with the large angles of inclination of the front parts. The turret is cast. Its front plate has a combined armor protection. Protection against mass destruction weapon is achieved by the structural strength and hardness of the hull and turret, extra shielding, sealing system and air cleaning system in the crew compartment. In the end 60-st years, the tank T-64 A surpassed all the other tanks on the world by the level defence, as from ordinary armaments, so protection against the mass destruction weapon. The tank is equipped with the entrenching tools and the device of hanging up a mine sweeper.
The tank is powered by 2-sroke diesel 5TDF engine. The engine power is 515 kilowatt (700 hp). The engine is multifuel, compact and economizing. The tank has seven forward gears and one reverse. The caterpillar track assembly consists of the caterpillar tracks with rubber-metallic hinges. The tank is equipped with the independent torsion-bar suspension. The tanks is provided with the effective fire fighting system as well as with the deep wading equipment that permits water fording up to 5 meters deep.
